JANUARY 2005 (Second Edition)
The Ottawa Buddhist Society
has
iintroduced a new publication to its
members and friends in honour of the beauty of Dhamma.
In contrast to conventional OBS newsletters, which usually focus on OBS
news and activities, this new
publication aims to focus solely on personal reflections and thoughts on the
Buddha’s teachings from members of our own spiritual community.
While it will include the occasional contribution of external Buddhist
writers or teachers, the focus will be on articles, poems, artwork, etc. from
within the OBS family. It is our
hope that Kalyana will act as a positive outlet for Dhamma creativity and
that it will allow members of our community to share and delight in the beauty
of the Dhamma together.
Inspired
by a collection of Dhamma talks by Ajahn Sucitto, the name “Kalyana” was
suggested by a long-standing member of the OBS, and was warmly accepted as the
name of our new publication. The
word “kalyana” comes from the Pali language, and can be translated as
‘beautiful’, ‘uplifting’, ‘lovely’.
The Buddha used this word to describe the beautiful nature of the Dhamma,
and of the spiritual friends (kalyanamittas) who help us along the right path.
Both possess a beauty that transcends mere sensory appreciation – a
beauty that is felt directly and profoundly by the heart.
It is therefore fitting that we choose this word as the name for our new
publication. This name not only refers to the beauty we see and reflect
upon in the teachings of the Buddha, but also honours the beautiful nature of
our strong and growing Ottawa Buddhist Society community.
