About Ajahn Ayya Medhanandi

Ayyā Medhānandī (b. 1949, Montreal), began meditating as a college student and practised with an Advaita master in India for four years. An MSc graduate of Tufts University, she managed UNICEF, WHO and other health and nutrition programmes in Senegal, Ecuador, and Nepal.

Ayyā took her Buddhist monastic vows in 1987 at the Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha, Rangoon, where she was ordained by Sayadaw U Pandita. Later she joined the Amaravati Nuns Community under the tutelage of Ajahn Sumedho, and since 1999, while based in New Zealand and Malaysia, has been teaching in Asia, the Pacific Rim, and North America.

Her book, Gone Forth, Going Beyond, was published in 2007, the same year she took bhikkhuni ordination in Taiwan. Some of her reflections appear on www.satisaraniya.blogspot.com.
